Things to do in Peninha
Walk to Peninha with a local guide: a 17th-century sanctuary high in the Sintra hills, with views from the Atlantic coast to Lisbon.
The origin story
Peninha
Peninha is a small sanctuary on one of the highest points of the Sintra hills, above the cliffs of Cabo da Roca. Local tradition tells of an apparition of the Virgin to a young shepherdess, and a chapel was built on the rock in the 17th century. From here pilgrims prayed and sailors watched the horizon, and on clear days the view runs from the Atlantic coast to Lisbon and the Tagus.
