About this tour

Discover one of the most magical places in the Sintra Mountains — Peninha, once known as a sacred place in the ancient Mons Lunae (Mountain of the Moon) landscape.

High above the forested slopes of Sintra’s mystical hills, Peninha sits at around 448 meters above sea level, offering spectacular views from the Atlantic Ocean to Lisbon and beyond. This place was not chosen by chance — it has drawn humans for millennia because of its commanding presence, dramatic views, and deep cultural memory.

Peninha is a site where nature and narrative meet. Local tradition tells of a humble young shepherdess, mute and poor, who encountered a mysterious woman on these rocks. Through this encounter — asking for nothing but help — she was given not only voice but guidance, leading the community to build a place of devotion here. Over time, this became the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peninha.

The power of this legend isn’t just in the miracle — it reflects how people have felt the sacred in this mountain for centuries. It is a place of pilgrimage and prayer, especially for sailors’ families seeking protection or sight of returning ships. It is a rugged spiritual threshold where forest, sky, and sea meet. It is a spot where the ancient ties between humans and nature still feel alive.

Today, as you walk with your guide, you’ll hear tales of mythic encounters, pilgrimage stories, the hermits who once lived here, and how this place evolved — from spirituality rooted in ancient beliefs to a dramatic baroque chapel standing high on the ridge.

The origin story

Peninha 17th-century sanctuary

Peninha is a small sanctuary on one of the highest points of the Sintra hills, above the cliffs of Cabo da Roca. Local tradition tells of an apparition of the Virgin to a young shepherdess, and a chapel was built on the rock in the 17th century. From here pilgrims prayed and sailors watched the horizon, and on clear days the view runs from the Atlantic coast to Lisbon and the Tagus.

The origin story

Sintra Since 1147

People settled in the Sintra hills long before Portugal existed, and the Romans knew the range as the Mountain of the Moon. The Moors built the castle on its ridge, and in 1147, after the conquest of Lisbon, the hills passed to the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques. The National Palace became a royal residence in the Middle Ages and stayed in use for centuries, and in the 19th century Romantic kings turned the hills into the landscape of palaces and gardens that UNESCO listed in 1995.
