Lisbon pub crawl: Bairro Alto, Cais do Sodré and the Tagus
Lisbon was a port long before it was a capital. Phoenicians, Romans and Moors traded here before Afonso Henriques took the city in 1147. From Belém, at the mouth of the Tagus, the ships of the Age of Discovery set sail, and the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém still stand from that age of voyages. Every OriginTours day trip starts from this river.

Porto pub crawl: from the Ribeira to the Galerias de Paris
The Romans called the settlement at the mouth of the Douro Portus Cale, and the name later gave the whole country its name. Porto grew on the steep granite bank of the river, its merchants traded wine with England, and its historic centre, from the Ribeira to the cathedral hill, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

Coimbra nightlife: student traditions and fado
Coimbra was the first capital of Portugal, from 1131 until 1255, and Afonso Henriques, the first king, is buried in its Monastery of Santa Cruz. In 1537 the university settled for good on the hill above the Mondego, and the city has lived to the rhythm of its students ever since: black capes, serenades and Coimbra fado.

Nazaré at night: sunset at Sítio and bars by the sea
Nazaré's story starts with a legend. In 1182 the knight Dom Fuas Roupinho was chasing a deer in the fog when his horse stopped at the edge of the cliff of Sítio, and he credited Our Lady of Nazaré with saving his life. A chapel and a sanctuary followed, and a fishing town grew on the beach below. Offshore, the Nazaré Canyon, one of the largest submarine canyons in Europe, focuses the swell into the giant waves of Praia do Norte.

Leiria at night: the castle lit up and the historic centre
In 1135 Afonso Henriques built a castle on the hill above the river Lis to guard the frontier of the young kingdom. King Dinis and Queen Isabel later lived there, a royal palace with a Gothic loggia was added inside the walls, and at the end of the 15th century Leiria had one of the first printing presses in Portugal.
