About this tour

Begin your hike in the western slopes near Santa Eufémia, following old paths used by shepherds, pilgrims, and travelers for centuries. As you walk in the quiet darkness, the city sleeps below you — and the land slowly reveals itself.

Along the way, hear stories about the myths of the Mountain of the Moon, the beliefs tied to protection, fertility, and rebirth, and the idea that this land carries a blessing — not religious, but ancestral.

As the sky begins to change, reach a high viewpoint overlooking all of Lisbon. Then comes the moment. The sun rises behind the city, lighting the Tagus River, the bridges, the rooftops, and the hills one by one. From above, Lisbon feels small, calm, and timeless. This is not a viewpoint tourists stumble upon — it is a place you arrive at with intention.

Stop, breathe, and watch. This experience is about starting the day — and your journey — with meaning. Connect Sintra’s ancient mysticism with Lisbon’s living energy. See Portugal not from a monument, but from the land itself.

The origin story

Sintra Since 1147

People settled in the Sintra hills long before Portugal existed, and the Romans knew the range as the Mountain of the Moon. The Moors built the castle on its ridge, and in 1147, after the conquest of Lisbon, the hills passed to the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques. The National Palace became a royal residence in the Middle Ages and stayed in use for centuries, and in the 19th century Romantic kings turned the hills into the landscape of palaces and gardens that UNESCO listed in 1995.

The origin story

Lisbon Since 1147

Lisbon was a port long before it was a capital. Phoenicians, Romans and Moors traded here before Afonso Henriques took the city in 1147. From Belém, at the mouth of the Tagus, the ships of the Age of Discovery set sail, and the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém still stand from that age of voyages. Every OriginTours day trip starts from this river.
