About this tour

Step back to the origins of Portugal on this immersive 360° experience at the Moorish Castle of Sintra, where history, landscape, and legend come together.

Perched high above the mountains, the castle offers a free, panoramic view over Sintra, the Atlantic coast, and the Tagus valley — the same view once used by Muslim and Christian forces to control territory, defend routes, and shape the future of the land.

This tour takes you to the heart of the Christian Reconquest of Portugal, when Sintra was taken from Moorish rule in the 12th century during the campaigns of King Afonso Henriques, with the support of crusaders from Northern Europe. Walking along the ancient walls, towers, and battlements, you will relive the struggle between cultures, faiths, and powers that defined medieval Iberia.

Beyond the battlefield, discover how this moment marked the birth of a nation, laying the foundations for Portuguese identity, territory, and independence. The mountains, the castle, and the horizon tell a story of resistance, strategy, and belief.

This is not just a viewpoint — it is a return to the origins of Portugal, seen from above, where history unfolds in every direction.

The origin story

Sintra Since 1147

People settled in the Sintra hills long before Portugal existed, and the Romans knew the range as the Mountain of the Moon. The Moors built the castle on its ridge, and in 1147, after the conquest of Lisbon, the hills passed to the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques. The National Palace became a royal residence in the Middle Ages and stayed in use for centuries, and in the 19th century Romantic kings turned the hills into the landscape of palaces and gardens that UNESCO listed in 1995.
