About this tour

Begin your journey in Alcântara, once Lisbon’s industrial and maritime backbone. Discover how this working-class riverside district was the engine behind empire, trade, and movement.

Next, head to Belém, where sailors departed toward the unknown, guided by science, faith, and ambition. Explore the stories behind the Jerónimos Monastery, the Tower of Belém, and the Tagus River as a living road — not a barrier, but a path to the world.

As the Tagus widens, stop in Algés and Dafundo, once fishing villages and industrial hubs. Learn about the story of everyday life: fishermen, factories, taverns, and the slow transformation from labor zones to coastal communities.

Continue to Cruz Quebrada and Caxias, where forts and defensive lines protected Lisbon from the sea, while thermal baths and early seaside retreats attracted royalty and elites. Discover how defense, health, and leisure merged along this stretch of coast.

In Oeiras, dive into the Enlightenment roots of modern Portugal. The Marquis of Pombal turned this area into a center of science, agriculture, and innovation, blending palaces, vineyards, and strategic planning with the Atlantic horizon.

Next, visit Carcavelos, home to the historic Carcavelos wine. Explore how exports, beach culture, and early tourism reshaped the coastline — and why this area became a symbol of openness and freedom.

Continue to Estoril, once quiet land that became a refuge for kings in exile, spies, artists, and wartime secrets during World War II. Uncover stories of casinos, diplomacy, and hidden histories beneath the glamour.

Finally, end your journey in Cascais, where origins come full circle. From humble fishing village to royal summer retreat and Atlantic icon, Cascais represents the balance between tradition and elegance, nature and culture, past and present.

The origin story

Cascais Royal since 1870

Cascais was a fishing village at the mouth of the Tagus until 1870, when King Luís I chose its citadel as the royal summer residence and the court followed him to the sea. Villas and promenades spread along the coast to Estoril, which during the Second World War and after became a refuge for European royal families in exile. The road from Lisbon to Cascais tells the story of how fishing villages became Lisbon's Atlantic Riviera.

The origin story

Lisbon Since 1147

Lisbon was a port long before it was a capital. Phoenicians, Romans and Moors traded here before Afonso Henriques took the city in 1147. From Belém, at the mouth of the Tagus, the ships of the Age of Discovery set sail, and the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém still stand from that age of voyages. Every OriginTours day trip starts from this river.
