About this tour

Every journey of the Age of Discovery began on this river. In 1497 Vasco da Gama sailed from the beach of Restelo, in Belém, on the voyage that opened the sea route to India, and for centuries ships left the Tagus for Africa, Asia and Brazil.

This sunset sail follows the same water. Leaving the marina at Alcântara, the boat glides under the 25 de Abril Bridge, opened in 1966, and along the riverside of Belém, with the Monument to the Discoveries, the Jerónimos Monastery behind the gardens and the Tower of Belém, built between 1514 and 1519 to guard the entrance to Lisbon. Across the river, the statue of Cristo Rei watches over the city.

As the sun goes down, the light turns the river and the hills of Lisbon gold. Sit back with a glass of Portuguese wine, help with the sails if you like, or simply enjoy the view while your skipper tells the stories of the river.

It is a relaxed way to end a day in Lisbon, and a beautiful setting for couples, families and small groups. Private sails are available for celebrations and proposals.

The origin story

Lisbon Since 1147

Lisbon was a port long before it was a capital. Phoenicians, Romans and Moors traded here before Afonso Henriques took the city in 1147. From Belém, at the mouth of the Tagus, the ships of the Age of Discovery set sail, and the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém still stand from that age of voyages. Every OriginTours day trip starts from this river.
